Credit Repair

If you are finding it difficult to arrange any type of finance, or just want to improve your overall credit file, you will need to engage in some form of credit repair. This involves tweaking your finances so that they impact in a positive way on your credit report.

There is no magic fix that can improve your credit report overnight, contrary to what some financial firms may claim, but if you act sensibly and adopt a responsible attitude to your financial commitments, then you will, in time, see an improvement.

Once you have looked at your credit report, you will be able to identify the entries that are affecting your credit score. You may just have too much existing debt and are not considered a suitable candidate for more borrowing on that basis, even if you have not defaulted at any time. Just reducing your overall debt burden might be enough to improve your score.

But if your report contains other negative entries, ones that show that your present or previous handling of debt has not been up to scratch, then this is where you need to start the process of cleaning up your report.

The sort of entries that will give you a poor credit rating are:

  • Not having had credit long enough to be able to establish whether you are a good credit risk or not.

  • A record of any major financial upheaval such as bankruptcy, or having reached a financial settlement with existing creditors, either through the courts or by direct contact.

  • Being referred to a collection agency for non payment.

  • Not paying ordinary bills on time, or missing some payments altogether.

  • Failure to pay a tax bill.

  • Defaulting on any past or present loan agreement.

You cannot change what has already happened, it is there for all to see, but you can start to make changes that will improve your credit file over time. You will need to demonstrate an improved attitude towards your management of borrowed money, for it to have an impact on your credit file. That is only going to happen in time.
